Little B - the story behind our brand
We’re the ‘Black’ family. Hello!
Starting our family really made us think about how much more we could do to help protect our planet. We had an eye-opening moment in 2018 when watching BBC documentary, Drowning in Plastic. It was a shocking wake-up call for us, highlighting the devastating impact today’s throwaway culture is having on our environment. As a family we decided to do more to reduce our plastic waste and carbon footprint.
One of the first things we ditched was cling film. I remember walking into a well-known high street kitchenware store to buy beeswax wraps... then I saw the price and decided to make my own. The first batch was a disaster! But luckily I’m as stubborn as I am frugal so I kept going, tweaking the recipe and techniques until I’d cracked it. By then I’d roped my husband, Iain, into making and we both caught the bug for making wax wraps. And suddenly it clicked – here was an opportunity for us to turn a passion project into a family lifestyle business that could make a positive impact on the environment.
When thinking of a name for our new business, we wanted to stay true to our roots. When pregnant with our first child, he was given the nickname Little B, so ‘Little B’ seemed the perfect fit for our brand.
Before long we were being asked by customers for fellow eco-friendly products, so we turned to other local makers and our product range has continued to evolve ever since. We now stock a wide range of eco-friendly alternatives, from cloth sanitary pads, washable kitchen roll and sandwich pouches, to natural and plastic-free deodorants, reusable face wipes, baby wipes, refillable drinks bottles and much more. We’re always looking at new eco-friendly products to add to the Little B shop, each one tried and tested by us before it makes the final cut.
Little B is all about making it easy for you to make the switch to more sustainable products that are right for you and kinder to our planet. We love discovering planet-friendly alternatives that have minimal impact on the environment. And we’re passionate about partnering with retailers and other makers who share our ethos.
When we first started looking at ways to reduce our household waste, it wasn’t as easy as we’d hoped. In fact, we found it pretty overwhelming. Where do you start with zero waste? How do you make the right eco choices for you? Just how sustainable are the alternatives on offer? For us, the challenge was balancing finding eco-friendly products that don’t cost a fortune, while not completely losing the convenience we’ve become used to. So, we know from our own experience that trying to live more sustainably can be difficult and, like most, we’re still learning along the way!
Big love, The B family
